a great deal 可在句中作状语，修饰动词或形容词和副词的比较级，此时不加of。
deal用来表示“大量，相当多”时不用 large修饰，而习惯用 great/good来修饰。
a great deal of表示“许多”时,只能修饰不可数名词。
